Have you tried integrating mobile media and social media? It’s a great way to reach people in a targeted way. They self-select joining your community and they give you something precious that you must guard, their mobile phone number. Yes, this is the new email list.

Last year I gave a talk on mobile media and the power of “now” with adoption. One year later and mobile is still blowing up…

Instead of teaching the power, I wanted to tap in to it. So, this week I set out on test of the tools. With the help of Laura Jo Richards, I set up a keyword campaign on an emerging mobile platform “iZigg“. Last year, I used Club Texting, which I also recommend, especially if you do not want a monthly recurring charge.

The event I’m testing this with is the ”Beyond Social 101′s Blah Blah Blogging Bootcamp” conference for women, by women. The goal in creating and organizing this conference was to create a platform for women in technology to stand on and connect them with other women in business.

Creating a contest was easy, but socializing it took a few minutes to make it attractive. After creating a note in Facebook, and sharing it with friends, a targeted list started to be develop. Here’s the Facebook post I created:

Win 2 Tickets to go beyond social 101 by adding blogging to the mix | Text “beyondsocial101″ to 90210

Contest time!!!

Why:

We are testing out iZigg as a mobile media tool for tradeshows & events. Help us determine if mobile media really works!

What:

We are all set for tomorrow’s Meet & Tweet and Saturday’s first ever, Columbus Blogging Bootcamp for women, by women put on by Talk Social Networking featuring Girls In Tech. If you haven’t registered, here’s your last chance!!! We’re raffling 2 tickets today and tomorrow…

How to enter:

Just text BeyondSocial101 to 90210

Winners:

Announcements made at 10 p.m. today and noon tomorrow! No fee to enter, just a std text msg rate. Don’t delay. Text it now!

Details about the conference are here http://www.beyondsocial101.com/.

It’s an intimate regional conference with attendees coming from across the U.S.

A lesson I learned today: Make sure people understand that by opting in to your contest, or if you are doing it live at an event, they will receive 2-3 initial messages. The first is a confirmation, the second is your personal message. For some, who have limited texting plans, this may be less attractive, so be careful when setting up your campaign, and communicate expectations.

More lessons later, since the contest is still running, so check back later for results.

So, are you curious about the winner of todays raffle for the event? Drum roll please….

Tune in tomorrow… winners have been notified and we’re awaiting their Twitter ID’s.

The tech industry is dominated by men, and there are many observations as to why. Some assert inequality in hiring and promoting, some assert the distinct differences in the nature of women vs. men (such as communication), and some make different assertions. Take for example the commentary on TechCrunch last year, which asserts that women aren’t risk takers, here’s the excerpt from the original interview:

This conversation about what women are doing in technology is being addressed by a cool group called Girls In Tech (GIT), founded by Adriana Gascionge. Her mission was to provide a place for women to cultivate ideas around their careers and business concepts involving technology. GIT is a non-profit, headquartered in San Francisco, California, and supports over 12,000 members spread between 57 chapters world-wide.

I believe the number of women in technology flocking to GIT is a great starting place for tech event organizers to start looking, when the “Call For Presenters” go out and panel discussions are formed. These women are leaders, innovators, community organizers, entrepreneurs, etc.

Columbus, Ohio is a great example of that. For the first time in the mid-west, on February 26, 2011, a technology conference is being being held at TechColumbus (a venue sponsor), for women in business–15 of the 17 presenters are women with emerging and booming technology based businesses. Entrepreneurs through and through.

The night before this big conference, called “Beyond Social 101 – Blah Blah Blogging Bootcamp for Business“, Girls In Tech, will officially launch it’s presence in the region with a Meet and Tweet event. Invitation is open, just RSVP here. Tickets are only $10. More details about the event can be found here.

To talk about the disparity is one thing, but to do something about is another. The Columbus Chapter of Girls In Tech will seek to address the following issues over their first year in operation:

What should be done to close the gap?

How can we inspire young women to adopt a technology focused career?

How do we prepare women in technology to be the leaders they need to be to compete with and collaborate with male counterparts?

What can we learn from men to help emerging innovators thrive?

Share your insights below.

This morning I had the privilege of being a guest on Lyn Mettler’s show: Social Media Tips for Entrepreneurs.

She kicked off the call with her review of a newer tool: Foursquare. Here’s an excerpt from her blog on the tool:

Could FourSquare be the next social media darling for business? Could Twitter possibly be de-throned? We think so. FourSquare is a location-based application that you run on your smart phone that allows users to “check-in” when they are out and about. Headed to Publix? Check-in. Out with the guys at the neighborhood pub? Check-in. It definitely…read more here: Get FourSquare and Get Busy.

I have to admit, at first, I wasn’t too keen on publicizing my every movement, as if I had a tracking device on me, but I can see the merit of it in some instances. Just wondering, all you “foursquare” users, what has been your experience? Do you like it? Is it worth it? Take a poll here.

I’ll weigh in after 10 days of trying it!

Girls in Tech is a social network enterprise focused on the engagement, education and empowerment of like-minded, professional, intelligent and influential women in technology. As young women with the capacity to inspire, we made it our personal desire and passion to create and sustain an organization that focuses on the collaboration, promotion, growth and success of women in the technology sector.

Created in February of 2007, ‘Girls in Tech’ (GIT) was founded by Adriana Gascoigne. GIT and was born out of a need to provide a place for women to cultivate ideas around their careers and business concepts involving technology.

Girls in Tech aims to offer a variety of resources and tools for women to supplement and further enhance their professional careers and aspirations in technology. Some of these resources include, educational workshops and lectures, networking functions, round table discussions, conferences, social engagements, and recruitment events.

It is always exciting to uncover hot and profitable new niches to tap into for your Virtual Business. Well, Internet Marketing, Ecommerce Support and Social Media Marketing continue to be very in-demand” services niches and will continue to be for quite some time, I am particularly excited about this new niche emerging in the Virtual Event Industry.

I personally believe that the “Virtual Events” field is one of the hottest avenues to building your business right now, especially in this down economy. The statistics are clear: There is currently a significant increase in the number of participants attending virtual events such as webinars, tele-events, live podcasts and web TV shows. However, there is a corresponding decrease in those attending offline events and conferences partly due to the economy, but for a host of other reasons as wells. The reality is that Virtual Events are more cost-effective to deliver and attend, have the capacity to reach a larger audience and can be re-broadcast for continued exposure.

Businesses are keenly interested in running Virtual Events right now, but many lack the knowledge and time to effectively set-up and implement the Virtual Events successfully. As a result, this has presented a very timely and unique opportunity for Virtual Professionals to position themselves as a “Virtual Event Specialist”!

On September 16th, VAClassroom will be hosting a “must attend” event with Craig Cannings and Virtual Event Expert, Michelle Schoen titled “Building a Profitable Niche as a Virtual Event Specialist (Even in a Down Economy)!”

They will be exploring the crucial skills required to effectively deliver Virtual Event Set-up and Management services to your clients.

In addition, they will be sharing some exciting news on our upcoming training program: The Virtual Event Specialist Certification.

So, go ahead and click on the below link to watch a short 5 minute video and then sign-up to receive some special bonus information including more details on the upcoming event on September 16th!
